Tsitsipas meets Australian Open king Nole Djokovic in final

Novak Djokovic is about to win his 10th title at the Grand Slam tournament in Australia and his 22nd overall. The Serb was already the top favorite in the tournament, also because some co-favorites had to sit out. After a 2-year Corona break, Djoker meets Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. He wants to win his first Grand Slam title.

The Djoker was not allowed to enter Australia for 2 years and was therefore not allowed to take part in the Grand Slam tournament. Because of this, he has now been unbeaten in this tournament for 5 years. In the years 2019 to 2021 he was always able to win the title. In general, he is the most successful player Down Under with 9 Australian Open titles. In the final against Stefanos Tsitsipas he wants to win his 22nd Grand Slam title. The Greek, on the other hand, is aiming for his first major title. So far he has been in a Grand Slam final once and that was at the French Open in 2021. In Australia, on the other hand, he made it to the final for the first time. After a rather poor performance lately, he now seems to be in top form.

Stefanos Tsitsipas analysis

The current number 4 in the world won an important tournament with Monte Carlo last year. In the Grand Slam tournaments, on the other hand, he mostly ran behind his own expectations. His greatest success was the semi-finals at the Australia Open. He seems generally comfortable with these. By reaching the final, he now makes it to at least the semi-finals for the third time in a row.

Apart from reaching the semi-finals, he didn't do much last year. At the French Open he had to say goodbye after the round of 16 and in Wimbledon it was even over after only the 3rd round. At the end of the year there was even a defeat in the 1st round of the US Open. There he generally never got past the 3rd round, even though it is also a hard court.

He ended the year with the ATP Finals in Turin. There he met Novak Djokovic, among others. The game was lost in 2 sets. He also had to admit defeat to Andrey Rublev. But he was able to prevail against the Russian Daniil Medvedev in 3 sets. At the end of the year there was prize money of almost €5 million in the account. In total, he had to admit defeat against Novak Djokovic 4 times in 4 duels.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently in 4th place in the ATP world rankings. Casper Ruud, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are currently ahead of him. All 3 players have already been eliminated from the tournament and could not even compete. Just under 1000 points behind number 1 Carlos Alcaraz, he would have the chance to become the new number 1 in the world if he wins the Australian Open. So far, 3rd place was the best placement he could achieve. It was last there on January 11, 2021.

The Greek didn't show any weaknesses in the first 3 rounds and didn't drop a single set. It was only in the round of 16 that a seeded player awaited him in Jannik Sinner. The Italian is number 15 in the world and is one of the greatest hopes for youngsters in tennis. This was also evident in this match, because Tsitsipas was only able to prevail in 5 sets. Although this game certainly cost a lot of strength, he prevailed in the quarter-finals in just 3 sets against the Czech Jiri Lehecka. He then played the semifinals against Karen Kachanov. He also showed a largely good performance against this and prevailed in 4 sets. So far, the Greek has only lost 3 sets at the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic analysis

Can Djokovic reach Rafael Nadal and his 22 Grand Slams, again? The Serb currently has 21 Grand Slam successes, making him the second most successful tennis player of all time. Only Rafael Nadal is ahead of him with 22 successes. Djokovic could catch up with the Spaniard if he wins the Australian Open. The Australian Open has been his absolute favorite tournament so far, because he won 9 of the 21 Grand Slams Down Under alone. Last season he also won Wimbledon and the Rome Masters. At the French Open, however, he only made it to the quarterfinals. He had to sit out the US Open.

Overall, Djoker has been number 1 in his career for 373 weeks. He is still considered the best tennis player in the world, together with Rafael Nadal. The 5th place in the world rankings is therefore somewhat atypical. However, there is a very simple reason for this. The Serb has not been able to take part in the Australian Open for the past two years. There were also no world ranking points for his Wimbledon victory last year. He also had to sit out the US Open and was unable to collect any points. With a win at the Australian Open, he would at least become number 2 in the world again. Only Carlos Alcaraz he can't catch even with a win.

This is difficult to answer, because the Serb had to be treated a few times at the Australian Open and didn't always seem fit to us either. On the other hand, he still managed to win all his games and many even accuse him of simulating something. When you look at the results, this is understandable, because apart from his game in round 2 against Enzo Couacazd, he was able to win every game in 3 sets. This certainly gives him a small advantage over his opponent.

As mentioned above, the djoker has only dropped one set so far and that was in the 3rd round against Frenchman Enzo Couacaud. This one set went into a tie-break and was narrowly lost 7:5. He then won 4 games in a row without dropping a single set. With Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev and Tommy Paul he beat 3 seeded players. His advantage could now be that he comes to the final really rested, after all his opponent had to give a little more sets and thus invest a little more time on the court.

Tsitsipas - Djokovic: What to expect?

The current No. 5 in the world meets No. 4 in the world in this final. However, the direct duels speak clearly for the Serbs. Djokovic won 10 of 12 duels against Tsitsipas and was only beaten twice. He suffered the two defeats in Canada and Shanghai in 2018 and 2019. The Greek has not been able to win against Djoker for more than 3 years. The last 9 duels of these two have all been won by Novak Djokovic. 2nd time they met in a Grand Slam. Both times at Roland Garrs and both times the game was 5 sets. So we can definitely look forward to an exciting game.

The Djoker has never lost a final at the Australian Open! It is therefore hard to believe that this will happen this time. Even if the odds are low, we can only recommend a win for Novak Djokovic. But we believe the Greek is capable of winning at least one set. After all, the last duels between the two were mostly very exciting. We therefore expect Over 38.5 games in the game. With odds of 2.00 you should play this as a single bet.

  • Over 38.5 games
  • Novak Djokovic to win
