Can Leverkusen catch up against Roma?

In the semi-finals of the Europa League, the second leg is scheduled for Thursday (May 18, 2023). Bayer Leverkusen may have to catch up from a 1-0 deficit against AS Roma, but the situation is by no means hopeless. The game kicks off at 9 p.m. in the BayArena. In the second semi-final Juventus Turin and FC Sevilla face each other. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw.

Bayer Leverkusen is required. After the 0-1 in the first leg in the Olimpico, only a win will help the Rhinelanders to advance to the Europa League final. If it succeeds with a two-goal gap, the final ticket is secured. If Leverkusen win by just one goal, it goes into overtime. The away goals rule has now been abolished. That means: Even with a 2-1 win, Xabi Alonso's team is not yet eliminated. They just have to win.

Edoardo Bove was the match winner in the Olimpico in the first leg. He scored the golden goal for Roma in the 63rd minute. With this narrow lead, the Italians are now going into the second leg of the semi-finals. Which also means: With every win and every draw, no matter what the result, AS Roma are through and are in the Europa League final. By the way, this will take place on a Wednesday evening (May 31, 2023) in the Hungarian capital Budapest in the Puskas Arena.

Mixed feelings at home games for Leverkusen

The remarkable run ended in the Rhine derby against 1. FC Köln, which Bayer Leverkusen lost 2-1 at home in the BayArena. It was also the first defeat in a home game in six matches (five wins, one draw). In the Europa League, the home record in three games at the BayArena has been mixed and even. Leverkusen lost the first leg against AS Monaco (2-3). They showed a calm performance against Ferencvaros Budapest (2-0). And against Union Saint-Gilloise it was 1-1 after the first leg. Of course, the Roma, we don't have to emphasize that in this analysis, are of a different caliber.

How good is Roma really?

We can't exactly describe the Romans' dress rehearsal before the second leg in the semifinals of the Europa League as a complete success. At FC Bologna, AS Roma did not get more than 0-0 in Serie A. In any case, Roma are currently finding it difficult to retrieve their form. Because they only won one of the last six competitive games. Regrettable from a German point of view that this was the game against Leverkusen. Because before the semi-finals, Rome had lost 2-0 at Inter Milan. Also with 1: 3 at Atalanta Bergamo. Three matches ended in draws.

But if we take a closer look at the performances and results of the Italians only in their guest appearances, the chance for Leverkusen quickly becomes clear. AS Roma managed just one win in eleven competitive games in foreign stadiums . It was a razor-thin 1-0 win at FC Turin. Four games ended in a draw, six were even lost. And out of six away matches in the 2022/23 Europa League, Roma have only won one (2-1 at HJK Helsinki). Feyenoord Rotterdam and RB Salzburg recently suffered defeats (each 0-1). No goals were scored at Real Sociedad.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Roma: What to expect?

In the last three guest appearances of the Italians in the Europa League, only two goals were scored. So not only the Under 2.5 always worked out, but even the Under 1.5. This was also the case in the capital city's last championship game in Bologna (0-0). At the BayArena, three of the last four games in the Europa League across the seasons have ended with a maximum of two goals. Only the match against Monaco had more goals. In this respect, we consider a goal bet under 2.5 in this forecast to be a very good choice. If you want a little more risk and better odds, you should go for Under 2.0 or even Under 1.5.

  • Under 2.5
  • Under 1.5 (risk)
  • Roma not to lose (X2 or 2 DNB)
