IPL 2024 Auction: Starc, Mitchell, Rizvi among top buys

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Player Auction was held on December 19, 2023, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, featuring 333 cricketers who went under the hammer1. Out of these, 77 players were sold, including 30 overseas players, for a total of ₹2,30,45,00,000.

The most expensive player of the auction was Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping ₹24,75,00,000. Starc, who had opted out of the previous edition of the IPL due to personal reasons, was in high demand among the franchises, as he is considered one of the best pacers in the world. Starc will join fellow Australians Pat Cummins and David Warner in the KKR squad, making them a formidable force in the tournament.

The second-highest bid was for New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, who was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings for ₹14,00,00,000. Mitchell, who made his T20I debut in 2019, has impressed with his batting and bowling skills in the shortest format of the game. He has scored 317 runs and taken 18 wickets in 22 T20Is so far3. Mitchell will add depth and balance to the CSK team, which already boasts of stars like MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Faf du Plessis.

The third-highest bid was for Indian batsman Sameer Rizvi, who was acquired by Delhi Capitals for ₹8,40,00,000. Rizvi, who is only 19 years old, has been hailed as a prodigy by many cricket experts. He has scored 1,234 runs in 15 first-class matches, with an average of 77.12 and a strike rate of 82.434. He has also scored four centuries and six half-centuries in his domestic career so far. Rizvi will join the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, and Rishabh Pant in the DC batting line-up, making them a formidable force in the tournament.

  6. Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand all-rounder, bought by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹1,80,00,000.
  7. Shai Hope, West Indian wicket-keeper, bought by Rajasthan Royals for ₹75,00,000.
