Top game in Serie A

Eight games before the end of the season, the Italian Serie A enters the exciting phase. The two teams Atalanta Bergamo and AS Roma meet for the supposed top game of the 31st match day. The sixth in the table welcomes the third in the table at home. Despite the better starting position, AS Roma are seen as the slight outsiders, while the hosts from Bergamo are seen as the slight favourites. Unlike in the Bundesliga or the Premier League, the Italian Serie A is a bit clearer. The championship is almost certain and now it only depends on which teams occupy which position in the table. The undisputed leader is SSC Napoli, which is the measure of all things in the current season, at least in the league. They could collect 75 points from 30 games. Far behind in second place is Lazio Roma, 14 points behind Napoli. 
The second club in the capital and part of our analysis, AS Roma, follows five points behind Lazio. AC Milan is fourth and last place in the Champions League, followed by Inter Milan and Atalanta Bergamo in sixth place. Bergamo is thus on the last place in the table, who still qualifies for the European competitions. Places three to six are separated by only seven points and therefore there could still be a lot to do with the positioning in the remaining eight matchdays. 

At the other end of the table, things don't seem so exciting anymore. At least for Sampdoria and Cremonese, the stay in the first division seems over and can hardly be saved. Hellas Verona is currently in 18th place in the table, which is also relegated, but they are not quite that far behind and could still manage to stay up in the league. Atalanta are the favorites

As already mentioned in the introduction, the hosts are considered to be the slightly favored team to win. Although they have a slightly weaker initial situation, the difference is only minimal. The better odds probably come in large part from playing at home and hoping for some decent support from the 12th man. 

For Bergamo, the season has so far gone a little differently than planned. After finishing eighth in the league last year, they failed to qualify for any European competition. So the only thing that remained was the Italian Cup and Serie A. In the Cup, they were eliminated by Inter Milan in the quarter-finals. They are currently sixth in the league. They could collect 49 points from 30 games. They are five points ahead of seventh Juventus Turin, who must be kept at a distance in order to qualify for the Europa Conference League. Two points are missing on Inter Milan, which occupy the Europa League place. If they can still advance to fourth place, they would qualify for the Champions League.

Recently they couldn't really present themselves satisfactorily in Bergamo. They lost a few places compared to the beginning of the season and are now on their worst place in the table since last year. They could only win two of the last five matches. There were also two losses and a draw. If they cannot turn the shape curve upwards, it will be difficult to achieve the desired goals. Now, with AS Roma, a top opponent is waiting, which will by no means make it easy for them.

Roma has many fronts open

Even if both teams are similarly strong, Roma still have a chance to finish the season considerably better. In the league they are in third place and have so far collected 56 points from 30 completed match days. The top two ranks are out of reach, but they still secured a place in the Champions League. In the league, the goal will be to defend this place over the last eight games. Like Atalanta, they were also eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup. Unlike Bergamo, however, they still play at European level. 

After winning the Conference League last season, they are trying their hand at the Europa League this year. Here they meet Feyenoord in the second half of the quarter-finals on Thursday evening. In the first leg they lost 1-0 away. Nevertheless, the chances are not bad that they still turn the result and move into the semifinals. Under the leadership of José Mourinho and the Conference League title behind them, they are automatically one of the favorites in the Europa League.

Roma couldn't present themselves perfectly lately either, but at least a little better. They have a record of three wins and two losses in the last five games. It is noticeable that they do not always present themselves well, especially against top teams and in the Europa League. 

After reaching 2-2 away, they narrowly won 2-1 at home. The round of 16 duel against Betis Sevilla was a little clearer. Here they even won the home game 4-1 and also won 0-1 away. With a total of 9 goals conceded in 11 Euro-League games, the main strength is the defensive. However, two important players are missing here. They also need at least one goal in Seville to make it into the semifinals.

Atalanta - Roma: What to expect? 

If you look at the past clashes between the two teams, Atalanta has the edge. In the last ten games, a one-sided picture was mostly drawn. Roma could only win two of the last ten matches. Meanwhile, Bergamo won five times and ended in a draw three times. It is noticeable that both teams scored in most of the clashes and that many goals were also scored. Overall, however, across the entire club histories of the two teams, Roma is clearly the better team. Looking at this record, AS Roma has 54 wins and Bergamo only 29, while they have drawn 38 times. For this game we expect either a draw or a win for the guests from Rome.
