How perfect can Spain start the 2023 Women's World Cup?

Group C at the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand opens on Friday. After the two hosts were already in action on Thursday, this Friday (July 21, 2023) is a match between Spain and Costa Rica. The match kicks off at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

Spain form

Spain's women's national team qualified first in Group B in Europe. Furia Roja won all eight qualifying games and scored a whopping 53 goals. Almost even more impressive: the Spaniards didn't have to concede a goal at all. Scotland, in second place, was never able to keep up despite a good 16 points. And Spain's national team also won the last four friendlies without conceding a goal, most recently 9-0 against Vietnam and 7-0 against Panama very clearly. In between with 3-0 against China and 2-0 against Denmark, at least still very sovereign.

In the last eleven international matches, the Spanish footballers have won ten times. Nine of them made it again to zero outside of the World Cup qualification. Only against Norway did they concede goals in a 4-2 draw. The Furia Roja conceded the only defeat against the 2023 World Cup hosts Australia. But what are the negative aspects of the betting tip forecast from a Spanish perspective? At least the Iberians still lack tournament experience. At the first six world championships, they weren't there at all. In 2015 it was already over in the preliminary round. And in 2019 the World Cup ended for Spain in the round of 16.

Costa Rica form

In our tip analysis, we have to doubt whether the women's national team of Costa Rica actually has a chance in the first match of the 2023 World Cup Group C. The Central Americans have managed just one win in their last seven games, beating Haiti 2-0. The other six matches were lost. Most recently with 0:2 against South Africa. Overall, Costa Rica's soccer players have not won ten out of eleven games. In this forecast we recorded a draw against Colombia (1:1) and also against Mexico (1:1). But that was about it in terms of success.

Like the Spaniards, Costa Rica have not had much experience at a World Cup finals so far. In 2015, the Central Americans failed in the preliminary round. Four years later, they failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup. Their greatest international success to date was second place at the 2014 North American Championships. By reaching the semi-finals at the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, Costa Rica also automatically qualified for this World Cup. There, the Costa Rican women lost 3-0 to the USA, then lost 1-0 to Jamaica in the third-place play-off in overtime.

Spain - Costa Rica: What to expect?

In the H2H comparison category, our result in the analysis is rather sparse. Because both women's national teams meet only for the second time in the history of international matches. The first meeting ended without a winner. At the 2015 World Cup, the second for the Spaniards and the premiere for Costa Rica, these two nations drew 1-1 - and then dropped out together in the preliminary round. In the course of many test matches, Costa Rica lost to Scotland, among others. For comparison: Spain had beaten Scotland 2-0 away and even 8-0 at home in qualifying for the 2023 World Cup.

In this analysis, we can safely ignore the fact that Costa Rica wrested a draw from the Spaniards, as they did in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Furia Roja is not only a big favorite and will win this game. Our betting tip is therefore 1 Win To Nil. So a Spanish victory without conceding a goal. Just as the southern Europeans have often managed to do in the past. However, since the odds are not particularly high, a goal bet over 4.5 is the best alternative.

  • Over 4.5
  • Spain to win to nil
