Argentina analysis

Argentina edged out Australia, the Netherlands (on penalties) and Croatia en route to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Defending champions France eliminated Poland, England and Morocco facing little trouble. It is interesting that both teams were able to score at least twice in all knockout games. Also, both teams conceded goals in the first two knockout games, but kept a clean sheet in the semifinals.

The last defeat before that was in the semi-finals of the Copa America in June 2019 against Brazil. The Argentines didn't let the defeat against the Saudis upset them, rather this disappointment welded Lionel Messi's team together. The Gauchos won 4 of the following 5 games and only had to go to penalties against the Netherlands despite a 2-0 lead.

The Argentines scored in all of their 6 World Cup games. Only against Saudi Arabia did they stay below 1.5 goals, in the following 5 games they scored at least two goals.

The South Americans won the title in their first two finals – at the 1978 home World Cup against the Netherlands and in Mexico 1986 against Germany. In the next two finals the Gauchos had to bow to the German team – 1990 in Italy and 2014 in Brazil.  

France analysis

France was not one of the World Cup 2022 obvious favorite picks, but Les Bleus came into the finals as the defending champions. The French team was inconsistent in the past few months . At the European Championship last year, they were disqualified in the round of 16, losing in the penalties shootout against Switzerland despite a 3-1 lead. Then at the UEFA Nations League France avoided relegation to the B Division at the last minute. But, at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, the Equipe Tricolore is showing their best side again.

In many games, the French act according to the motto: A horse only jumps as high as it has to. The Western Europeans often seem to play with the handbrake on , but got into the tournament without much difficulty and are now aiming for the first title defense of the world cup since Brazil did it back in 1962.

France is in the final of a soccer World Cup for the fourth time. In 1998, the Grand Nation won the 1st title at the home World Cup after two 3rd places had been the highest of emotions. Argentina - France: What to expect?
